I’m always on the lookout for ways to update or redecorate kitchens, especially ones that don’t involve a lot of money or a great deal of work. I just ran across these amazing dishwasher covers by Appliance Art, and I think they are one of the best inventions ever!

These are so easy to install. They’re magnetic, so if your dishwasher is magnetic, you can just stick the cover right on the dishwasher. If your dishwasher isn’t magnetic, no problem – just use the enclosed adhesive strips to put the cover on your dishwasher.

Each cover measures 26 inches high x 23.5 inches wide, so they should fit most dishwashers. You can also cut the cover to fit with a straight razor (you probably want to use a ruler or yardstick as well).

How to Take Care of Dishwasher Covers

The covers are easy to clean. You can generally just wipe them with a damp, soapy sponge. They are safe for most kitchen cleaners that you already have around the house – no special cleaners are required.

Be sure not to use any cleaner that contains alcohol or has any kind of thinner in it.

Holiday Dishwasher Covers

I’m amazed at all the different styles the dishwasher covers come in. If you’re the type who likes to go all out for the holidays, you can order covers in Christmas, Halloween, Easter, Thanksgiving, and 4th of July. They even have a dedicated “Happy Birthday” cover!

The covers can be removed and re-used from year to year. Just store them with your holiday decorations and slap them on your dishwasher again next year.

Stainless Steel Dishwasher Covers

The dishwasher covers also come in solid stainless steel, chalkboard, and black. They’re perfect if you want to change your dishwasher to another finish yet don’t want to buy a new dishwasher.

If you’ve just bought a stainless steel refrigerator and would like to have your dishwasher match, just order one of the stainless steel covers. They actually have several different stainless steel finishes so you should be able to find one to match your refrigerator.

Matching Refrigerator Covers

If you really want to deck out your kitchen, many of the dishwasher covers also have matching refrigerator covers. The combo price is very reasonable, so be sure to look for the combos if you want to cover both appliances.

Sometimes I feel like I am totally out of step with reality. Either that, or the big-name organizers are out of step with reality. Why? Because I frequently just don’t see how my life fits in with their organizing tips.

One of the biggest areas of clutter in my house is my kitchen desk, which we can’t even use as a desk because it’s piled high with mail and other paperwork. According to all the organizers, you should go through your mail immediately while standing over a trash can so that you can discard the junk mail. Then you should file or take action on all the other mail straight away before it has a chance to pile up.

Which sounds great in theory, right? It’s pretty straight-forward. But here’s my problem: When I walk in the door at the end of the work day with my mail, the mail is just not much of a priority. Maybe it’s just because I tend to only get junk mail. Really, the grocery store flyer with the weekly specials and the People magazine are the highlights of my mail.

When I walk in the door, I’ve got at least 2 kids and a dog who are clamoring for my attention right away. If my husband is home, I want to kiss him and talk about his day. Plus there’s usually dinner to see about or a counter to wipe off (no matter how clean I left the kitchen, somehow there’s always something that needs to be wiped off).

In other words, mail is just not key at that point. I don’t know how the organizers manage to come into their houses and deal with the mail as soon as they get home – maybe they live alone? Maybe their kids and dogs are better trained than mine are (most likely)!

So I was totally psyched to see this great suggestion while I was reading a magazine (perhaps Better Homes & Gardens?) while waiting for one of the kids at the eye doctor. This organizer must have a life similar to mine, because her suggestion was to keep a breadbox on the counter for the mail!

A breadbox will look great in your kitchen (unlike those plastic filing bins). When you get home, toss the mail in the breadbox so that it’s all contained rather than piled up somewhere. In the evening, or once a week, go through the breadbox and deal with all the mail when you have the chance.
